RALLY TO SAVE OLD SPENCES BRIDGE

This is a call out to people everywhere in BC and beyond who value heritage infrastructure and the life to be had by living in small villages. You can help save Spences Bridge and its heritage bridge by rallying to its support.

Our public servants are preparing to spend up to 3.5 million dollars to completely demolish Old Spences Bridge and to leave in its wake, nothing but a few cosmetic upgrades within the community. These upgrades are associated with access to the Trans Canada Highway which passes through the edge of town.

The engineering reports referenced by the Ministry do NOT condemn the bridge as it stands. Furthermore, the Ministry's decision is based only on consideration of the bridge's viability as a motor vehicle bridge, NOT as a pedestrian bridge. The decision thus completely ignores a variety of alternative uses of the bridge made possible by repurposing it for other than automobile use. These uses include tourism, cultural events, river access for fishing and boating, cycling, etc.

We believe the money required to demolish this important infrastructure at the heart of our community could be much better spent repurposing it for continued pedestrian/bicycle use well into the future.

PETITION DIRECTED TO BC TRANSPORTATION MINISTER TODD STONE

You can support our efforts to save Old Spences Bridge from complete demolition by signing our online petition right now through a link at at www.therattler.ca. More than 260 people, double the population of our village, have already done so! Comments can be added to that signing and an email including same will be sent automatically to Minister Stone. A pen and paper version of the petition will be available here in Spences Bridge at the Rally on June 21.

Once 500 people have signed, our petition, a contingent of residents intend to deliver a hard copy of it to Minister Stone in person.

RALLY TO SAVE OLD SPENCES BRIDGE, JUNE 21, 2014 NOON TO 4 PM Audio interview here.

The purpose of this Rally is to reveal widespread support for our efforts to save Old Spences Bridge from complete demolition. Networked primarily via social media, the Rally will provide a venue for unified collective expression aimed at letting our public servants know that we expect them to acknowledge, and respond to, the preservation values at the core of this effort to save one of the last remaining heritage structures in our town.
