Finding Our Way Into the Sun of Consciousness

INTRODUCTION

"Our culture has little understanding of the purpose of myth or the role of the myth-maker. Myths are not for believing or disbelieving. They are for using. If a myth or metaphor works in revamping our deepest values, it is truer than the evening news or the textbook fact. Myth, poetry, art and music are truths of a different dimension — sustenance and regeneration for the tired spirit. The human brain learns best by story, by game, by a framework of meaning." Welcome.
Presented within these electronic pages is an opportunity for you to become actively engaged in an emerging planetary adventure that gifts you with an astrologically-determined, spiritual birthright integrating some of humanity’s most ancient and revered wisdom teachings.

Rooted in, but not limited to, a rich mythological tradition of the Americas known as
Feathered Serpent, Quetzalcoatl, your birthright is accessed primarily through contemplative, inner work of the sort described by Mayan elder Hunbatz Men:
"To be Quetzalcoatl or Kukulcan is to know the seven forces (chakras) that govern our body — not only know them but also use them and understand their intimate relationship with natural and cosmic laws. We must comprehend the long and short cycles and the solar laws that sustain our lives. We must know how to die, and how to be born."

Mesoamerican cosmology informs much of the Lightning Path. It teaches that vast cycles of time can be comprehended and made personally meaningful through conscious alignment with astronomical phenomena called World Ages. According to this cosmic framework, humanity is now entering a new era of planetary consciousness and it is from this notion that the by-line for this website arises: Finding Our Way Into the Sun of Consciousness.

THE POWER OF MYTH
In presenting this body of work to you, I am mindful of the teachings of mythologist Joseph Campbell who, in his widely acclaimed book The Power of Myth proposes four major functions of myth.

According to Campbell, the first function of myth is mystical "Myth opens the world to the dimension of mystery, to the realization of the mystery that underlies all forms. If you lose that, you don't have a mythology. If mystery is manifest, throughout things, the universe becomes, as it were, a holy picture. You are always addressing the transcendent mystery through the conditions of your actual world."

Campbell sees the second function of myth as
cosmological "....the dimension with which science is concerned -- showing you what the shape of the universe is, but showing it in such a way that the mystery again comes through."

Campbell explains that a third function of myth is
sociological: "supporting and validating a certain social order."

Fourthly, we have the pedagogical function of myth: "...how to live a human life under any circumstances." In other words, how to get along to assure social survival.

Aspects of all four functions of myth are to be found in what I share with you here, but it is ultimately the pedagogical function of myth that I emphasize, for what good is any of this if it does not help us navigate our way successfully through the challenges of day-to-day life?

Through a practical form of lunar cycle attunement, the Lightning Path enables those of us so-attuned, to face our individual, day-to-day challenges with a common focus of attention informed by ancient wisdom. With this notion in mind, therefore, and with great faith in our common humanity, I invite you to join me in pushing onward, and inward, together!

Planetary culture is best defined in terms of anomalies, for anomalies express the limits to the categories of the old “paradigm.” Planetary culture is neither world-denying mysticism nor world-destroying materialism; it is a Pythagorean synthesis of science, religion, and art; it is spiritual ecstasy and political economy, preindustrial magic and postindustrial technology, myth and history; in short, it is an embodiment of transcendence.
